Winter reading: unveiling my tbr!

Time flies by incredibly fast and while everyone is channelling the Christmas spirit, you might just overlook the turn of the seasons. That’s right, winter reading is just around the corner! And for me, that means it is time to change out my TBR. Each season, I choose around 5 books that I feel fit the vibe of that time of the year in an effort to enhance my reading experience. Besides that, I also just have a lot of fun doing it. So here it is, my list of books I want to read this winter!

A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens

I meaaaaaan, how could I not? I love the Christmas season, the music and the lights everywhere. They just seem to call for a timeless classic. In addition to that I also have been telling myself for the longest time that I need to read more classics and so, there you have it. Two birds with one stone! I found this beautiful copy from the Wordsworth Editions (find the Wordsworth collection here!) a few months ago and immediately knew I wanted to read this around Christmas time!

If we were villains – M.L. Rio

If you’ve read any of my other reading blogs before you will probably know by this point that I love the dark academia genre. And so I could not get through the dark days of winter without adding at least one new addition to that list. Winter reading demands a mysterious tale. I chose “If we were villains” because it often gets compared to Donna Tartt’s ‘The secret History’ which I read a few months ago and really enjoyed! From what I’ve read, this book follows a similar plotline of a group of college friends where one turns up dead and you slowly figure out what happened and why. Can’t wait to read this!

A good girl’s guide to murder – Holly Jackson

When I tell you this book has been sitting on my shelf for the longest time I mean it. I distinctly remember buying it in August 2022, well over a year ago. Not because I wasn’t interested in the book, the opposite really, but other priorities just presented itself. But not anymore! It’s finally time and I’m so excited. This one is about Pippa, who is researching a murder that happened in her town a few years prior for her final-year project. During her investigations she finds out all kinds of secrets and that maybe nothing is as it seemed to be. Sounds amazing to me and since it’s a YA novel, it should also be quite an easy and chill read to add to this list.

The atlas paradox – Olivie Blake

Another one I’ve been waiting for for a long time! I read the first book in this instalment earlier this year (I believe in April) and I was blown away. The magic system and the world building is incredible, it has characters you love to hate and the plot twists in this book were things I never saw coming. So, needless to say, I have been patiently waiting to get my hands on the sequel and find some time to start reading it. I am in love with Olivie Blake’s writing style and her book ‘Alone with you in the ether’ is even on my five stars book list! (read about my five star books here!) So when I was putting together my TBR for my winter reading I immediately knew this book had to be on it!

Six of Crows – Leigh Bardugo

Concluding my winter reading journey is a cherished re-read. Six of crows is one of my favourite books of all time and my boyfriend got me this extremely gorgeous collector’s edition for Sinterklaas (a Dutch celebration we have in the beginning of December, kind of like Christmas). I really want to go through this book to annotate all my favourite lines and sections so that I have a fully customized hard-cover of my favourite book at the end! Six of Crows is also perfect to read in winter because I don’t think the weather in this book has been good once. It is always dark and/or raining and a large part of the book centres around a heist of the Ice court. A perfect read for winter and a perfect conclusion to this list.
