Spring reading list

It seems like the older I get, the faster the world spins. Mentally I’m still in January but in reality, spring has started! I’m incredibly excited because spring is my favourite time of year. But the new season also means a change in my reading list. As I explained in my winter tbr blog, I pick out around 5 books every season that I want to read. And so I am here today to share with you: my spring reading list!

Tommorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow — gabrielle zevin

I’ve been wanting to read this book for the longest time! While the subject of friends developing a video game together is not exactly the most interesting premise to me, I’ve heard nothing but amazing reviews about this book. The description of following a group of friends over a few decades reminded me a lot of ‘a little life’ which made my 5 star book list. I have the book next to me right now and on the back it reads ‘This is a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and, above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Yes, it is a love story, but it is not one you have read before.’ How could you not be excited for that!!

this is how you lose the time war - amal el-mohtar & max gladstone

A book that got onto my radar because of my favourite booktuber Jack Edwards (check out his channel here, he is awesome). This is how you lose the time war is a love story between two women on the opposite sides of a time war. They correspond through letters and while they start as enemies, their relationship evolves to something more epic and romantic that could change the past and the future. I am incredibly excited to read a queer love story again and this setting sounds more than epic. Two badass space agents battling in a time war? Sign me up!

Emma - jane austen

I had this idea that I wanted to read more classics and so I would pick one in every season’s list. But wow this one intimidates me. The copy that I have is really pretty but there are over 400 pages and the letters are so small that I have a feeling that this book is going to take forever to read. Nevertheless, I am really interested to see if I like it. I don’t think I have ever read one of Jane Austen’s books before so I’m curious to learn more about her writing style and stories. The only thing I know going into this book is that the novel centres on Emma Woodhouse, a precocious young woman whose misplaced confidence in her matchmaking abilities occasions several romantic misadventures.’ Sounds like a really fun read to me, I’ll keep you guys updated!

before the coffee gets cold - toshikazu kawaguchi

This novel translated from Japanese has also been on my radar for quite a while. I love a good, emotional read so I feel like this will be a great pick for that. The story is about this café in Tokyo that offers its customers the chance to travel back in time. We follow 4 of these customers while they travel back in time to speak to loved ones, confront people or meet ones they never got to know. The only rule is: you must be back before the coffee gets cold. Japanese literature is known for its beautifully emotional narratives and I’m really thrilled to read this one.

Cleopatra and frankenstein - coco mellors

Last but not least! This is a recommendation I got from booktok. It’s about Cleo, who is in her early twenties, has no money to her name and is an overall mess. She meets Frank, who is 20 years older and has his life together. They find in each other what they miss in their own lives and decide to get married on a whim so that Cleo can get a green card. This to me sounds like a hilarious story that could only go wrong. I like that it ends the list on a bit of a lighter tone and I really hope I’m going to be able to get to it this season!

And that concludes my spring reading list! If you have read any of the books mentioned in this post or have other recommendations to share, I would love to hear from you! Leave your thoughts in the comments below and let's keep the conversation going. Happy reading!
